VARILIGHT White Chocolate - La Crème de la Crème

With the trend towards high-gloss surfaces in contemporary interior design continuing to gather pace and the enduring appeal of cream in more traditional homes, the launch of Varilight's new White Chocolate high-gloss cream finish has been well-timed.

Offered in Varilight's Dimension Screwless range, the White Chocolate finish is paired with coordinating polished chrome switch rockers, toggles, control knobs and buttons. A wide range of switches, sockets, connection units and dimmer switches are available. White Chocolate PowerGrid and DataGrid faceplates are also available which, paired with polished chrome PowerGrid modules and white DataGrid modules, extend the core assortment making the range suitable for a wide variety of projects and applications including kitchens, living and dining rooms and bedrooms.

To order items from the White Chocolate range, the letter "W" should be used to denote the finish in Varilight's standard stock coding system. For example, the code for a 1-Gang 2-Way 10A Rocker Switch is XDW1S.

V-Pro: The New Name for VARILIGHT Trailing-Edge

V-Pro is the new name for our intelligent trailing-edge dimmer range (formerly known as J-series dimmers). V-Pro dimmers are extremely versatile and perform superbly with most dimmable LEDs. The range was developed with Philips MasterLED and Toshiba dimmable LEDs but performs well with most other brands of dimmable LED as well. In addition to dimmable LEDs, the V-Pro dimmer is also suitable for traditional mains voltage lighting, mains halogen, dimmable electronic low voltage transformers and dimmable CFLs. VARILIGHT trailing-edge dimmers produce a very gentle waveform which equips them be extremely versatile and extends lamp life considerably. Item codes for V-Pro dimmers begin with a J. Already available are V-Pro 1- or 2-way push on/off, rotary dimmers. V-Pro touch/remote control versions are currently in development and are expected to be available by the end of 2011.

J-Series Trailing-Edge Intelligent Dimmers

Our new trailing-edge intelligent dimmer switches are designed to control a wide variety of loads. The output from the dimmer is gentler on the load than the IQ intelligent dimmer series and so you can expect longer lamp life.

The new dimmers will be available in all ranges and are rated at 1-gang 2-way 400W, 2-gang 2-way 2x250W, 3-gang 2-way 3x300w, 4-gang 2-way 4x250W.

They are suitable for controlling standard incandescent mains voltage lighting, mains halogen, electronic transformers and Varilight dimmable CFLs. J-series dimmers are not recommended for use with wire wound transformers, fans or motors.

"Impulse" Push-On/Off Switches from VARILIGHT

We are pleased to reveal an exciting addition to the VARILIGHT range of decorative wiring accessories - "Impulse" Push-On/Push-Off Switches. A stylish alternative to rocker or toggle switches, impulse switches are rated at 6A. They are currently offered in 1- and 2-gang versions and will be available as 3- and 4-gang later in 2010.

Impulse switches can also be used in combination with VARILIGHT touch/remote dimmers on multi-gang faceplates for circuits containing loads that cannot be dimmed. These combinations are not stock coded so please order from your supplier by describing the combination you require.

If used in combination with VARILIGHT "Switch Dimmable" low energy light bulbs (CFLs) an additional feature called "Impulse Dimming" can be utilised. With impulse dimming a light touch triggers the dimming cycle of switch dimmable lighting. A second light touch resets the light level. A full push switches the light on or off.

Decorative Rockers for Fused Spurs and 20A Switches

Decorative metal versions of Fused Spurs and 20A Double Pole Switches have now been added to Varilight's Classic, Ultraflat & Screwless ranges. The new versions are available with or without neons and the fused spurs as switched and unswitched.

The new products complement the existing range of decorative metal rockers already available for 10A 2-Way Switches, 10A Intermediate Switches and 13A Double Pole Sockets and the decorative control knobs on Dimmers and the decorative Toggle Switches.

The product shown is a Switched Fused Spur with Neon in the Varilight Screwless Mocha range (Product Code XDM6NDS).

To order the decorative version of a product, replace the "B" (black) or "W" (white) in the product code with a "D" for decorative. For example, to order a decorative version of product code XC6W (Classic Bevel-Edge Mirror Chrome Switched Fused Spur with White Insert), please use order product code XC6D. Similarly, for the Screwless Low Profile XDC20NBS, please order the decorative version using product code XDC20NDS.

The latest addition to our PowerGrid range are black grid modules in a wide range of 10A 2-Way, Intermediate, 20A Double Pole and Key Switches, Fuse Holders and Flex Outlets that can be paired with any of the decorative faceplates available.

PowerGrid - New from VARILIGHT

We are pleased to announce the forthcoming launch in January 2009 of VARILIGHT^® PowerGrid^TM.

PowerGrid will be a major new addition to the VARILIGHT Dimension range of electrical accessories, available in brushed steel, polished chrome and premium white. At launch there will be 42 new PowerGrid modules 24 grid faceplates across the three finishes enabling the end-user to create countless combinations to produce tailor-made wiring accessories for specific projects.

Dimension PowerGrid will employs mini fixing screws but will complement the existing range of Dimension Screwless sockets and DataGrid accessories to create one hugely expanded range assortment.

PowerGrid switch modules will be available as 10AX 2-way and 20AX with 2-way and 1-way configurations, single and double pole. Standard switches, including some incorporating neons are complemented by intermediate switches, key switches, 2-way and off retractive switches, 13A fuse holders, 16A flex outlets and green, amber and red neon indicator modules, blanking modules and both 250W and 400W multi-purpose 2-way dimmer modules.

Four different grid substrates will be offered for 1- or 2-gang on a single-sized faceplate and 3- or 4- gang on a double-sized faceplate.

In addition, "mega-gang" options will be available using two or three of the 3- or 4-gang substrates with new, larger 6-, 8-, 9- and 12-gang faceplates.

DigiFlux from VARILIGHT - A Grand Designs Trade Secret

VARILIGHT's revolutionary DigiFlux Dimmable Energy-Saving Light Bulbs (CFLs) are featured in More 4's Grand Design Trade Secrets programme tonight.

In a feature on the future of lighting the bulb is used to show that energy-saving lighting can now be used in place of traditional GLS lamps even where the light needs to be dimmed.

During the programme, lighting designer Jason Bruges demonstrates the smooth dimming characteristics of the DigiFlux light bulbs. A full range of light levels are available from 3% to 100% brightness with a pleasing warm white light.

VARILIGHT CFLs Best in Class in Lighting Magazine Bench Test

VARILIGHT's DigiFlux Dimmable CFLs have been awarded "Best In Class" by an independent Bench Test conducted by industry-leading journal Lighting.

The VARILIGHT DigiFlux CFLs were awarded five stars by the judging panel who commented in particular about the smoothness, rate and range of the dimming possible; the warmth of the colour shift; and compact size of the product. The product was regarded as second only to the filament bulb - a great accolade for any energy-saving light bulb and reward for the years of tireless development involved in achieiving such a performance from a CFL.

VARILIGHT Dimmable CFL Wins Lighting Award at 100% Design

British company, Doyle & Tratt Products Ltd, have won the inaugural award at the 100% Design exhibition at Earls Court in London for the most innovative lighting product with the world’s first fully dimmable energy-saving light bulb. The accompanying product launch was achieved after seven years developing their patented DigiFlux® technology.

This type of bulb, often called a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), represents a diversification for Doyle & Tratt, best known as manufacturers of VARILIGHT® dimmer switches and decorative electrical switches and sockets

At the exhibition the product was shown to great effect. As part of their climate campaign, Greenpeace UK is lobbying hard to persuade more people to switch to energy-saving bulbs. They teamed up with lighting designers, Jason Bruges Studio, to create the exhibition stand for last week’s 100% Design exhibition at Earls Court. Jason Bruges Studio wanted to create an interactive “light garden” and made use of the VARILIGHT® fully dimmable CFL. They put on an interactive display of 256 dimmable CFL's arranged as a flower garden.

VARILIGHT have initially released two fully dimmable 20 Watt products:
1) dimmable with a standard dimmer switch.
2) dimmable with a standard on/off switch.

Both products come with either a standard bayonet fitting or a standard screw fitting.

Dr Tony Doyle, the managing director of Doyle & Tratt Products, explains:

“The bulbs are exceptionally efficient giving a maximum light equivalent to 110 Watts of normal incandescent bulbs yet smoothly dimming down to 2.5% brightness. The light is the same “warm white” light as normal bulbs. (For the technically minded: 1300 lumens dimming down to 32 lumens with a colour temperature of 2700 degrees Kelvin.)

From multiple on/off tests as adopted by all CFL manufacturers the lifetime of the lamp is projected as 16000 hours, commonly assumed to be 16 years of normal use. This compares with 1000 hours (1 year) for normal bulbs. Additional energy savings are made by dimming these CFLs and calculations show that environmental savings are considerable, contributing to a reduction in global warming; saving over 500 kilograms of carbon dioxide in the life of a single bulb. On present day electricity costs, over £100 will also be saved."

Doyle & Tratt Products Ltd thrives on its cutting-edge technology and won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation in 2006 for its intelligent dimmer switches and designs of its decorative switches and sockets.
